Mama Pearl and the Tennessee State Flower

By: Jill Routon Wilson

When Governor Tom Rye asked Mama Pearl for her help in choosing the Tennessee State Flower, childhood memories of the experiences that she shared with the Ogburn family flooded her mind. Walking through gardens, smelling beautiful flowers, and getting to spend time in nature, she knew what she must do. Mama Pearl came up with a special plan to include the school children to help write this chapter in our state’s history. This is the story of my great grandmother, Pearl Sanders Routon.

Jill Routon Wilson will do a presentation on this book and the history of the Tennessee State Flower on Tuesday, November 24th at MES.
